About this wine
This is an old vine, village wine from a .8 ha plot planted 50 years ago. Located in southern Chambolle, the vineyard has excellent exposure. The wine ages 15 months in oak barrels - 45% new.
About the grape
Pinot Noir is an ancient grape from eastern France. Notoriously challenging, it thrives in cooler climates. It can be very transparent because of its lightness and flavors of red fruit and earth.
About the vintage (Domaine perspective)After a sweet winter, the spring was early and warm. The blooming went fast which always promises beautiful grapes in September. The vineyard enjoyed the beautiful sunny days in June and September. Even if the weather was gloomy during this summer, our mood and the quality of our grapes weren’t impacted. The harvest began on September 18th under a beautiful blue sky.
Our tasting impressions
The nearly purple color is beautiful. The still youthful nose smells candy sweet and is redolent of red berries and earth - oh, so Chambolle and oh so gorgeous! The usual delicacy of Rion seems clean but not sterile. The tannins are very mannered allowing the same red berries and earthy flavors to dance artfully across the tongue. This rings the bell on the pleasure scale. Hard to resist presently but at least 10 years will allow some more nuanced mature notes to emerge.
On your table…
We enjoyed this immensely with slow roasted pork shoulder. The savory-sweetness of each married nicely. Serve at cellar temperature.

A true family affair, Armelle, Bernard and their daughters, Nelly, Melissa and Alice and her husband Louis, manage 7.5 hectares of vines producing 35,000 bottles of 14 wines across 8 appellations, including some of the most coveted ground in the Côte de Nuits. Five generations of this Rion family have been making wine since the late 19th century.
The Rions farm their mostly old-vine plots lutte-raisonnée (mostly natural and non-interventionist but within reason based on what nature dictates). Everything is done by hand, they destem completely, ferment 2-weeks in concrete tanks and age in a mix of old and new oak barrels.
Their wines are remarkably elegant and finessed while remaining true to the terroir of the different vineyards. While they do not display overt power, they do not want for structure and fortitude and are certainly age-worthy. They are heavenly with the truffles they forage with their 3 dogs.
