From Our Cellar

Dubreuil-Fontaine Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Clos Berthet (Monopole) 2017

Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine

 Our tasting impressions

Clos Berthet is often our favorite white chez Dubreuil-Fontaine and the 2017 only fortifies that claim.  Deep, expressive aromas that are unmistakably Chardonnay.  The medium bodied wine has great lift.  One of our members says, "it dances!"  The tasty fruit flavors, which lean more tropical than citrus, have good length.  A real delight now but in several years the experience will likely be more provocative.

About this wine

A Monopole is a Burgundy vineyard with a single owner.  The vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.  The red is classified village but this white is 1er Cru.  Dubreuil-Fontaine produces both from their 1 hectare.

The Chardonnay is from vines averaging 25 years old, planted in clay, limestone and white marl soil at the top of the southwest-facing hill. Grapes are harvested by hand, sorted and de-stemmed.

Vinification is traditional in oak barrels with stirring of the lees and 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine ages 10-12 months in oak barrels, 25% of which are new. Annual production is 5,000 bottles.

About the grape

Chardonnay is the most popular wine variety in the the US. Winemakers love the green-skinned grape as well because it’s so easy to grow and adaptive to many different production techniques. Grown everywhere, Chardonnay’s greatest expressions are widely believed to come from Burgundy. Indeed, this is believed to be where the grape originated. Chablis, in Northern Burgundy and Champagne also offer superlative examples of Chardonnay.

About the Vintage (Domaine perspective)

Good weather to start 2017, including a very warm April.  Then frost hit on the same day as the prior year but without harm to the vines.  The summer was warm and dry.  A fine harvest began on August 31st - only the fourth vintage to start in August.  Christine is pleased with the quality and the volume of the crop.
