Our tasting impressions

We are delighted to double-down on Nascetta, but this is a whole different animal our other one. In a jazz context, think of Viberti's as Dave Brubeck and Sòt like Thelonious Monk. Maurizio's skin contact rendition is a fascinating and impressive Orange Wine that needs air and/or time (It can be cellared for about 5 years). If it is redolent of oxidized pine, wait a day (or 2) for it to gather itself. It demonstrates beautifully the depth and sophistication of this variety. The mineral flavors are intense and the texture of this wine is exotic and sultry.


About this wine

100% Nascetta from a northwest-facing vineyard in San Giovanni at 300m. Vines are trained in the Guyot Counter-Espalier system. Grapes are harvested in the second week of September.

Maceration is 5-6 days, then the wine ferments without the skins for 20 days at 13-15ºC in steel tanks. The lees are stirred back in for 2 months in the same tanks.


About the grape

Nascetta is a white wine grape exclusively native to the town of Novello in Piedmont, which was best known for Barolo. Originally, it likely was used to produce sweet wine. For decades, it was virtually non-existent. No surprise as it is a real pain to manage. The vines grow wildly, yet the fruit production is minimal. The bunches are tight and subject to rot and also prone to “millerandage” or significant variation in berry size.


An increasing number of Langhe estates (maybe a couple of dozen) are producing Nascetta and not just because it’s the only indigenous white grape. It can produce wines with remarkable aromatics, expressiveness, brightness and structure. Total plantings are only 24ha (including vines planted outside of Novello. It was conferred DOC status in 2002 and became an appellation in 2010.


About the vintage

2019 was a challenging vintage but ultimately an excellent one. Yields were down about 15% on average. Growers had to deal with heavy spring rain and some hail. The summer was very hot and rot was a very real threat.

Young, Maurizio Sanso is a third generation grape farmer but he is the first to make wine. His grandparents began as sharecroppers but eventually purchased the property. His parents, Leonardo and Silvana and his sister Lorena work closely with him on the 17ha sustainably-farmed estate producing about 50,000 bottles per year.


Maurizio is fluent in and respectful of the traditions in the Langhe - but he is not bound by them. The vast array of winemaking and aging vessels in his cellar is an indication that he has an adventurous spirit. He also believes in producing each wine in a way that will best convey what its terroir has to offer. Some of these practices might fit into a description of a modernist producer but it is hard to describe this young talent in such a confining and ultimately inaccurate way.


Already gaining recognition in Europe for his precocious talent, Maurizio seems poised for a wider stage. VDLT is pleased to play in role in bringing the wines of Cascina Sòt to the United States.
