Our tasting impressions
Quite likely the finest young Rozier I have tasted from Pichon. The aromatics have real prestige that typify the beauty and sophistication of top-flight Côte Rôtie. Even though it is not entirely open, there is an impressive seamlessness to this wine. A spectacular Syrah that needs time or air to work through its tannins. A worthy addition to any cellar.
About this wine
92% Syrah and 8% Viognier from vines in a half hectare plot in the single vineyard of Rozier, planted more than 50 years go. Schist soil is on severely steep southwest facing slopes. The juice from handpicked grapes with yields of 40 hl/ha is aged 13 months in mostly new oak barrels.
About the grape
Syrah is the sixth most planted grape worldwide. It thrives on steep slopes because of the dry climate and soil that enable deep root penetration. The grapes are small and dark-skinned high in acid and tannins.
About the vintage
Prior to tasting, we were concerned about 2018. All the reports of very high summer temperatures, led us to expect new world-like ripeness and roasted flavors. But excellent early and late season conditions resulted in grapes with excellent balance. Top growers avoided low acidity issues. Overall, the Syrah wines are higher in alcohol without necessarily showing it. They are the perfect combination of the lavishness of 2017 and the brightness of 2016.
The Pichon family is a growing force in the Northern Rhône region. Christophe and Isabelle continue to steer the 23 hectare Domaine, but their sons, the third generation - Corentin, the principal winemaker and Alexis, who focuses on sales and marketing - are making their mark.
Based in Chavanay, the Pichons produce wines of elegance and finesse in a variety of appellations. Chemical treatment of the mostly Syrah and Viognier vineyards is kept to a bare minimum.
The joy of this family of eight is evident in their wines. VDLT has been visiting the Pichons for many years and is proud to include them as a foundation of the portfolio. A few years ago, Alexis visited New York for the first time for a VDLT tasting event. We enjoyed introducing him to some of NYC’s finest, as well as taking him on a tour of Long Island wineries.
VDLT is the only North American source for current vintages of Pichon’s wines.
