About this wine
Saint Joseph is gaining in popularity and respect as a result of a new generation of winemakers with incredible commitment to elevating the quality of the wines from this appellation.
95% Marsanne and 5% Roussanne from a 2-hectare site with granite soil, mid to top of slope. The yield is 40 hl/ha. The grapes are handpicked and the wine spends ten months in up to three-year old oak barrels.
About the grape blend
Marsanne and Roussanne are frequently blended in the Northern Rhône. Marsanne contributes body, richness, sweetness, fatness and an oily texture but very little acidity. Roussanne provides tension, finesse and deep aromatics.
About the vintage
2016 in the Northern Rhône was widely acclaimed but by no means easy. A wet spring was followed by a very dry summer. Proper ripening though was assured by ideal September weather. A vintage conducive to producing fresh, energetic and very terroir-transparent wines.
Our tasting impressions
One of our favorites chez Pichon for years, but 2016 reached new heights. There is a brightness to this vintage that separates it from the excellent ‘15. Beautiful nose and really delicious fruit, flower and mineral flavors. How can such a serious wine be so easy to drink?

The Pichon family is a growing force in the Northern Rhône region. Christophe and Isabelle continue to steer the 18 hectare Domaine, but their sons, the third generation - Corentin, the principal winemaker and Alexis, who focuses on sales and marketing - are making their mark.
Based in Chavanay, the Pichons produce wines of elegance and finesse in a variety of appellations. Chemical treatment of the mostly Syrah and Viognier vineyards is kept to a bare minimum.
The joy of this family of eight is evident in their wines. VDLT has been visiting the Pichons for many years and is proud to include them as a foundation of the portfolio. Last year, Alexis visited New York for the first time for a VDLT tasting event. We enjoyed introducing him to some of NYC’s finest, as well as bringing him to tour one of the best wineries on Long Island.
