About this wine
Along with our private label Chablis Vaulorent, this is VDLT's best selling white wine over the years.
A Monopole is a Burgundy vineyard with a single owner. The vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The red is classified village while the white is 1er Cru. Dubreuil-Fontaine produces both from their 1 hectare.
The Chardonnay, from vines which on average are 30 years old, are harvested by hand, sorted and de-stemmed. Fermentation is traditional in oak barrels with stirring of the lees. The wine ages 12 months in oak barrels, 25% of which are new. Annual production is 5,300 bottles.
About the grapeChardonnay is the most popular wine variety in the world - and in the US. Winemakers love the green-skinned grape as well because it’s so easy to grow and adaptive to many different production techniques. Grown everywhere, Chardonnay’s greatest expressions are widely believed to come from Burgundy. Indeed, this is believed to be where the grape originated. Chablis, in Northern Burgundy and Champagne also offer superlative examples of Chardonnay.
About the Vintage (Domaine perspective)
Good weather to start 2017, including a very warm April. Then frost hit on the same day as the prior year but without harm to the vines. The summer was warm and dry. A fine harvest began on August 31st - only the fourth vintage to start in August. Christine is pleased with the quality and the volume of the crop.
Our tasting impressions
Clos Berthet is often our favorite white chez Dubreuil-Fontaine and the 2017 only fortifies that claim. Deep, expressive aromas that are unmistakably Chardonnay. The medium bodied wine has great lift. One of our members says, "it dances!" The tasty fruit flavors, which lean more tropical than than citrus, have good length. A real delight now but in several years the experience will likely be more provocative.

Christine Dubreuil is a fifth-generation winemaker and owner of this Domaine. The wines are elegant, charming, and delicious - each wonderfully depicting its vineyard. The Domaine offers 28 wines.
Just 200-250 cases of these terrific wines are produced with only a small percentage coming to America. Burghound, Parker, and Nanson are each big fans of Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine wines.
“Her crowning Corton Grand Crus were some of the best I have tasted. The Clos Du Roi was my pick, but they all deliver extraordinarily high Grand Cru quality.” --Neil Martin (Robert Parker)
