Our tasting impressions
Another spectacular Clos Berthet in 2018. Of course, it's young and needs some time to coax out its charms. The nose is deep and rich with some toasty wood evident. As expected, it is bigger than 2017 but kudos to Christine for keeping all her whites at around 13.5% in a season that saw many wines exploding in alcohol levels. Lots of citrus and mineral flavors are precise and delicious. Excellent!
About this wine
A Monopole is a Burgundy vineyard with a single owner. The vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The red is classified village but this white is 1er Cru. Dubreuil-Fontaine produces both from their 1 hectare.
The Chardonnay is from vines averaging 25 years old, planted in clay, limestone and white marl soil at the top of the southwest-facing hill. Grapes are harvested by hand, sorted and de-stemmed.
Vinification is traditional in oak barrels with stirring of the lees and 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine ages 10-12 months in oak barrels, 25% of which are new. Annual production is 5,000 bottles.
About the grape
Chardonnay is the most popular wine variety in the US. Winemakers love the green-skinned grape as well because it’s so easy to grow and adaptive to many different production techniques. Grown everywhere, Chardonnay’s greatest expressions are widely believed to come from Burgundy. Indeed, this is believed to be where the grape originated. Chablis, in Northern Burgundy and Champagne also offer superlative examples of Chardonnay.
About the Vintage (Domaine perspective)
Christine called the 2018 vintage "Perfect!", as it offered fine quantity and quality. The grapes were lovely with no rot. The harvest was near the end of August, so quite early. She says the wines are rich but also fresh tasting. She wishes every year could be like this.
Suggested Glassware: Grassl Cru
Christine Dubreuil is a fifth-generation winemaker and owner of this Domaine located in Pernand-Vergelesses. Her wines are elegant, charming, and delicious - each wonderfully depicting its vineyard.
The Domaine makes more than 20 different wines. The 20-hectare estate is sizable, by VDLT standards and generates close to 100,000 bottles per year.
Christine is a leader in supporting women winemakers. Her daughter Clémentine, who is training with mom, appears to be following in her footsteps.
Chief has known Christine and her family for many years. They have spent many wonderful evenings enjoying great food and splendid older vintages from the Dubreuil-Fontaine cellar.
