Our tasting impressions
I love the zest on the nose! The mineral aromas of the soil are clearly delineated. This has nice body and just a touch of oak. Mostly it is light and refreshing with sufficient class and gravitas to remind you it is premier cru.
About this wine
This wine comes with an interesting label and story. The label is a comic strip in 3 panels with Christine having a conversation with the chef/owner of one-star Le Charlemagne.
Previously, this wine was strictly a private label offering at the restaurant because the vineyard is in its backyard. Now, it is available to the VDLT Community.
The Chardonnay is from vines about 30 years old, planted in clay, limestone and white marl soil; mid-slope with eastern exposure. Grapes are harvested by hand, sorted and de-stemmed.
Vinification is traditional in oak barrels with stirring of the lees and 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine ages 10-12 months in oak barrels, 25% of which are new.
About the grape
Chardonnay is the most popular wine variety in the US. Winemakers love the green-skinned grape as well because it’s so easy to grow and adaptive to many different production techniques. Grown everywhere, Chardonnay’s greatest expressions are widely believed to come from Burgundy. Indeed, this is believed to be where the grape originated. Chablis, in Northern Burgundy and Champagne also offer superlative examples of Chardonnay.
Christine's view of the vintage
The perfect vintage? Perhaps. Good quality and yield from yet another late August harvest. Beautiful grapes free of rot for both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They are rich but there is good freshness to balance. I will be happy if I can make a vintage like this every year.
Suggested Glassware: Grassl Cru
Christine Dubreuil is a fifth-generation winemaker and owner of this Domaine located in Pernand-Vergelesses. Her wines are elegant, charming, and delicious - each wonderfully depicting its vineyard.
The Domaine makes more than 20 different wines. The 20-hectare estate is sizable, by VDLT standards and generates close to 100,000 bottles per year.
Christine is a leader in supporting women winemakers. Her daughter Clémentine, who is training with mom, appears to be following in her footsteps.
Chief has known Christine and her family for many years. They have spent many wonderful evenings enjoying great food and splendid older vintages from the Dubreuil-Fontaine cellar.
