Pelassa Barbera D'Alba Superiore San Pancrazio 2019

Our tasting impressions

A study in Barbera purity. It could use some more time to evolve, so the terrific, ripe and saturated fruit still competes with the structure. Full bodied and delightfully round. An outstanding value for Barbera Superiore.

About this wine

100% Barbera from vines at 330m trained in the Guyot system. The grapes are harvested in the middle of October and de-stemmed and given a soft pressing.

Fermentation is 8-10 days at 26/27°C. The must is pumped over on  by racking to improve the extraction, color and the, aromas. After the malolactic fermentation the wine is matured in French and Slavonian wooden casks and barrels with weekly topping up before aging 12 months in oak and 12 in bottle.

About the grape

Barbera is a dark-skinned grape from vigorously growing, easy to manage vines. Barbera wines are high in acidity, low in tannins and light-bodied - although they can give the impression that they are big and hearty because of their purplish-black hue and relative roundness.

Barbera has been experiencing a Renaissance over the last couple of decades due to greater attention from talented winemakers who have discovered how to better craft the wines.

About the vintage

2019 was a challenging vintage but ultimately an excellent one. Yields were down about 15% on average. Growers had to deal with heavy spring rain and some hail. The summer was very hot and rot was a very real threat.

Daniele's suggested musical pairing: Tchaikovsky's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No.1 in D flat major

Suggested Glassware: Grassl Liberté

Mario Pelassa and Maria Teresa Pelassa established their Montà d'Alba wine estate in 1960. For the remainder of the century, they sold their wine to grateful clients in northern Italy.

When their sons took charge, the scope and ambition grew. Daniele makes the wine and is a tour-de-force in global marketing and sales. Davide prefers to stay close to the land and manages the vineyards. From their 15ha in Roero and Verduno, they now concentrate on three grapes - Nebbiolo, Barbera and Arneis and produce 100,000 bottles per year.

Daniele sub-titled Pelassa Romantic Wines of Piedmont. We are particularly enamored of his inclusion of musical pairings for each of his wines (which we will faithfully convey to our members). It is appropriate because his wines so beautifully inspire intellectually and emotionally.
