On February 5, 2020, 40 fun-loving, wine-ophiles gathered for an epic dinner and wine tasting. The crowd was mostly VDLT first-timers bolstered by some VDLT members and representatives from the Old Greenwich Wine Club.We all had the pleasure of hearing and learning from 3 Piedmont winemakers (a 4th was a guest).
The evening was co-hosted by our friend and collaborator, Gregory Dal Piaz. Many of the featured wines were his discoveries, including the 3 Chianti Classico Riservas we started with from Fietri, Montefioralleand Pomona. Click on any of them to learn more or buy.
Then it was time for the main event - Nebbiolo from Piedmont. First, Barbaresco and two vintages from another Dal Piaz find, Manuel Marinacci 2009 & 2015 that pleased many with their elegance. They were joined in the flight by a VDLT favorite 2013 Ugo Lequio Barbaresco Gallina.

Then 3 flights of Barolo, all from La Morra. Sergio Molino of Ernesto Molino (a Dal Piaz selection) produces small quantities of his own wine and consults with the next 2 producers as well as 23 others. His three outstanding selections included 2013 Riserva Fico, of which he makes just 800 bottles and 2014 & 2016 Bricco Rocca.

Next, Osvaldo Viberti offered 3 vintages of his rare cru, Serra dei Turchi "06, '15 & '16. The 2006, in particular, was sublime. VDLT has just one bottle left of each of 2 other Barolo crus of his, but his little known white, called Nascetta remains in-stock. Despite not being served on this night, it was much talked about.
We concluded with a vertical of Barolo Bricco Rocca from Cascina Ballarin (another excellent find from Dal Piaz). The winemaker could not be present but the Bricco Rocca from '11, '15 & '16 were lovely and inviting.
Given the enthusiastic response, VDLT is working to add to our portfolio any of the aforementioned not currently included.
All of the wines were enjoyed in Tasting Glasses from Grassl. VDLT plans to offer a variety of styles from this new and and terrific source of hand-blown crystal.
We leave you with a few more photos from this memorable, and perhaps already legendary, event.
